Plants are fixed in one place and face environmental stresses like wind and pressure, so they need a rigid cell wall for support and protection. The cell wall maintains shape and prevents damage. Animals, however, move and require flexible cells for movement and changing shape. Therefore, animal cells lack a cell wall and only have a cell membrane.
