The troposphere is the lowest layer, extending up to about 12 km, where temperature decreases with increasing altitude, and it contains most of the water vapour, clouds, and all weather phenomena like rainfall, fog, and hail. The stratosphere lies above it, extending up to about 50 km; it is free of clouds and weather disturbances, making it ideal for flying aeroplanes, and it contains the ozone layer, which filters out the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation. The two layers are separated by a transition zone called the tropopause.
