Aeroplanes fly in the stratosphere, which extends up to about 50 km above the Earth’s surface. This layer is ideal for flying because it is free of clouds and other weather disturbances, unlike the troposphere below it where rainfall, fog, storms, and other weather phenomena occur. The stable, calm conditions in the stratosphere make air travel smoother and safer.
