People built cities near rivers because they provided water, transport, fertile soil and fish. Rivers supported trade and religious practices. Even today, rivers are essential for water supply, farming and energy. However, pollution, waste and urban expansion have harmed rivers. Despite this, they remain crucial for survival, making it important to protect and restore them for future generations.

My rule would require all wastewater—whether from homes or factories—to be treated before entering a river. Local governments must build treatment plants and citizens must separate waste. Regular inspections and fines for violators would ensure enforcement. Community groups would monitor river health. This rule would prevent pollution, protect aquatic life and ensure clean water for future generations.

I can make a water filter using a plastic bottle, cotton, charcoal, sand and gravel. Cut the bottle, place cotton at the bottom, add charcoal, then sand and gravel. When dirty water is poured through, it filters out dirt and some impurities. Though not perfect for drinking, it shows how filtration works. This is a useful science activity to understand water purification basics.

    (a) Keep the river clean

To keep the river clean, I’d ensure industries treat wastewater before release, build sewage treatment plants and enforce strict anti-dumping laws. Citizens would be educated on eco-friendly habits. Plastic use would be reduced and riverbanks cleaned regularly. Eco-clubs in schools and campaigns would involve the community. This would preserve aquatic life and ensure the river remains safe for all living beings.

    (b) Prevent floods during heavy rains

To prevent floods, I would design the city with proper stormwater drainage and green spaces to absorb excess water. Flood-prone areas would have embankments and sandbag stations. Forested areas near the river would reduce runoff. A warning system would alert people early and emergency shelters would be built for safety. This ensures both human lives and animals are protected from flood disasters.

    (c) Ensure there is always enough water for everyone, even during summers

To ensure water during summers, I would build reservoirs and promote rooftop rainwater harvesting in every building. Treated greywater would be reused in gardens and toilets. Water ATMs would provide access in public places. Laws to prevent water wastage, community storage tanks and educating citizens would make usage efficient. Groundwater recharge zones would be created to store water naturally and sustainably for year-round supply.
