Why is studying the past challenging?

Studying the past is challenging because there are no written records for many ancient societies, making it difficult to understand their lives and events. Much of what we know comes from artifacts, oral traditions, and archaeological findings, which can be hard to interpret. Additionally, some sources may be biased or incomplete. The further back we go, the fewer materials remain, and the context of those that survive can be lost over time. As a result, historians and archaeologists must piece together information carefully and often make educated guesses about past events.
