The ancient Chinese referred to India as Tianzhu. This term was used to describe the lands to the southwest of China, known for their rich culture and advanced civilization. Chinese travelers, such as Faxian and Xuanzang, visited India in ancient times and brought back detailed accounts of Indian society, religion, and culture. The name Tianzhu is believed to be derived from the Sanskrit word Trikuti (meaning three mountains), referring to the region’s geography and spiritual significance. It was through these Chinese travelers that knowledge of India’s religious practices, especially Buddhism, spread to China and other parts of East Asia.
