What is the Buddhist concept of avidya?

In Buddhism, avidya refers to ignorance or lack of understanding about the true nature of reality. According to the class 6th social science NCERT, avidya is considered the root cause of human suffering, as it leads people to misunderstand the nature of life, the self, and the world. This ignorance prevents individuals from realizing the truth and attaining enlightenment (nirvana). To overcome avidya, Buddhism teaches the practice of wisdom, meditation, and following the Noble Eightfold Path, which leads to the cessation of suffering and the realization of ultimate truth.
