What is Indian Standard Time (IST)?

Indian Standard Time (IST) is the time observed throughout India and Sri Lanka. It is based on the time at the 82.5° East longitude, which passes through the town of Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh. IST is 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Unlike many countries that use different time zones, India follows a single time zone across its entire territory. This uniform time helps in maintaining consistency in daily activities, transportation, and communication across the country.
