Transport in xylem: The transport in xylem is from roots to upwards and takes place in only one direction. This is a kind of passive transport as no energy is required. Through xylem only water and minerals are transported.

Transport in phloem: The transport in phloem is bidirectional and food and some other products are transported. The transport in phloem is an active transport as it requires energy.

      Difference between Xylem and Phloem:
      Xylem:
      1. Xylem tissue helps in the transport of water and minerals.
      2. Water is transported upwards from roots to all other plant parts.
      3. Transport in xylem occurs with the help of simple physical forces such as transpiration pull.
      Phloem:
      1. Phloem tissue helps in the transport of food.
      2. Food is transported in both upward and downward directions.
      3. Transport of food in phloem requires energy in the form of ATP.

      Xylem

      1.  Xylem conducts water and dissolved minerals from roots to leaves and other parts.

      2. In xylem, the transport of material takes place through vessels and tracheids which are dead tissues.

      3. In xylem upward movement of water and dissolved minerals is mainly achieved by transpiration pull. It is caused due to suction created by evaporation of water molecules from the cells of a leaf.

      Phloem

      1. Phloem conducts prepared food material from leaves to other parts of plant in dissolved form.

      2. In phloem, transport of material takes place through sieve tubes with the help of companion cells, which are living cells.

      3. In translocation, material is transferred into phloem tissue using energy from ATP. This increases the osmotic pressure that moves the material in the phloem to tissues which have less pressure.
