Toss a coin 20 times and record the result each time (heads or tails). (i) How many times did you get heads? (ii) How many times did you get tails? (iii) Calculate the experimental probability of getting heads. (iv) If you toss the coin once more, what is the probability of getting tails?

In an illustrative 20-toss trial getting 11 heads and 9 tails, experimental probability of heads is 11 / 20 = 0.55. For the next toss, because a coin has no memory, tails probability remains 1 / 2 = 0.5.

  1. This is a hands-on activity; taking a standard trial of 20 flips:

    (i) Number of heads obtained = 11.

    (ii) Number of tails obtained = 20 – 11 = 9.

    (iii) Experimental probability of heads = Number of heads / Total tosses = 11 / 20 = 0.55 (or 55%).

    (iv) If tossed once more, past tosses have no influence because coin flips are independent events (avoiding Gambler’s Fallacy). The theoretical probability of tails remains 1 / 2 = 0.5 (or 50%).
