Instead of many small ones, why does a cell not have a single giant mitochondrion? How does this relate to the concept of surface area?

Cells have many small mitochondria instead of one large one to increase surface area. More surface area allows faster energy production, efficient reactions and better distribution of energy throughout the cell.

  1. Having many small mitochondria increases the total surface area available for cellular respiration. A larger surface area allows more chemical reactions to occur efficiently. If there were a single large mitochondrion, the surface area relative to volume would decrease, reducing efficiency. Multiple mitochondria also ensure proper energy distribution across the cell, supporting all activities effectively.
