Graphs representing two sound waves are given in Fig. 10.30. If the scales on the X and Y axes of the two graphs are the same, which of the two sound waves has (i) greater wavelength and (ii) smaller amplitude?

  • 1

Wave (a) has the greater wavelength because its consecutive crests are spaced farther apart along the distance axis and it also possesses the smaller amplitude due to lower vertical crest height.

1 Answer

  1. (i) Greater wavelength: Wave (a) has the greater wavelength because the horizontal distance between two consecutive crests or troughs is visibly larger than in wave (b). (ii) Smaller amplitude: Wave (a) has the smaller amplitude because its maximum vertical displacement of density from the average density line is noticeably less than the height of the crests in wave (b).
