The first stage of cell division is interphase. During this stage, the cell grows, carries out normal functions and duplicates its DNA. It prepares itself for division. After interphase, the cell enters mitosis, where actual division takes place. Interphase is important because it ensures that each new cell receives the correct genetic material.
