Rajiv Gandhi was an Indian politician and the sixth Prime Minister of India. He was born on August 20, 1944, in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, and was assassinated on May 21, 1991, in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, India. Rajiv Gandhi belonged to the Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty; his mother was Indira Gandhi, the first female Prime Minister of India, and his grandfather was Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India.
Rajiv Gandhi entered politics after the assassination of his younger brother Sanjay Gandhi in 1980. He became a member of the Indian Parliament and later, after the assassination of his mother Indira Gandhi in 1984, he succeeded her as the Prime Minister. During his tenure, Rajiv Gandhi focused on modernizing the country and initiated economic reforms. He also played a key role in bringing about social and political changes.
However, his term was marred by controversies, including allegations of corruption in the Bofors scandal. In the 1989 general elections, his party faced defeat, and Rajiv Gandhi resigned as the Prime Minister. He returned to politics in 1991 and was assassinated during an election campaign in Sriperumbudur.
Rajiv Gandhi’s legacy is complex, with supporters praising his modernization efforts and critics pointing to controversies and allegations of corruption during his tenure. Despite the controversies, he is remembered as a dynamic leader who played a significant role in shaping India’s political landscape during a crucial period in its history.
