Here are the reasons for the exploitation of workers in the unorganized sector:
1. Lack of Legal Protection: Absence of legal safeguards exposes workers to exploitation by employers.
2. Low Wages, Long Hours: Often subjected to low pay for extended working hours without proper compensation.
3. Unsafe Working Conditions: Workers endure hazardous environments without safety measures or access to healthcare.
4. Absence of Social Security: Lack of benefits like pensions or insurance makes them financially vulnerable.
5. Limited Bargaining Power: Inability to negotiate for fair wages or improved conditions due to absence of labor unions.
6. Informal Nature: Challenges in seeking legal recourse or addressing grievances due to the sector’s informal setup.
It is a fact that the workers are exploited in the unorganised sector due do the following reasons:
(i) The unorganised sector consists of small and scattered units which are largely outside the control of the government.
(ii) There are rules and regulations but generally these are not followed by the employers
(iii) Workers are employed on irregular basis. They are low paid and there is no provision for overtime, paid leave, holidays, leave due to sickness and other facilities e.g., provident found
(iv) Jobs are not secured. They can be asked to leave without any reason at the sweet will of the employer. Generally, when there is less work due to any reason’ some workers are asked to leave.
(v) Workers in this sector face social discrimination too because most of then belong to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Castes,
(vi) Some workers who do repair work etc. are also exploited as most of them belong to they do not get regular work.
Yes, workers are exploited in the unorganized sector. This would be clear from the following points:
• No stringent rules, regulation and policies that can be followed.
• There is no minimum or maximum number of working hours. The workers normally work 10-12 hours without paid overtime.
• No other incentives or allowances apart from the daily regular wages.
• Government rules and regulations to protect the labourers are not adhered to.
• There is no job or financial security.
• Labour is low paid in this sector are generally illiterate, ignorant and unorganized. So they are not in a position to bargain or secure good wages.
• They are always burdened with loans and debts. So, they can be easily made to accept lower wages.
• Social discrimination.
