Why was the Indus River important?

  • 1

The Indus River was extremely important for the ancient civilizations that flourished along its banks, particularly the Indus Valley Civilization. It provided a source of water for drinking, farming, and transportation. The fertile plains around the river supported agriculture, which was the backbone of the civilization’s economy. The river also acted as a natural barrier, helping to protect the early settlements. Trade along the river enabled the exchange of goods with distant regions. Overall, the Indus River was central to the development of early urban societies in the Indian subcontinent.
