Petroleum is classified as a non-renewable resource because it takes millions of years to form from the remains of ancient marine organisms buried under sediment. The process of its formation is extremely slow compared to the rate at which we extract and use it. As a result, once these resources are depleted, they cannot be replenished in a human lifetime. This scarcity and slow formation make petroleum a finite resource with limited availability.
