Why do we prefer a convex mirror as a rear-view mirror in vehicles?

Convex mirrors give a virtual, erect, and diminished image of the objects placed in front
of them. They are preferred as a rear-view mirror in vehicles because they give a wider
field of view, which allows the driver to see most of the traffic behind him.

Convex mirror is preferred as a rear-view mirror in cars and vehicles as it gives a wider field of view, which helps the driver to see most of the traffic behind him. Convex mirrors always form an erect, virtual, and diminished image of the objects placed in front of it.
A convex mirror is used as a rear-view mirror becausethe image provided by a convex mirror is
Erect -Hence, the image produced to the driver is not inverted, it’s right side is up.
Diminished- Hence, the image produced is much smaller than the actual size of the object. This helps in providing a wider field of view.
Drivers use convex mirror as a rear-view mirror in automobiles because of the following two reasons:
1. A convex mirror always forms an erect, virtual and diminished image of an object placed anywhere in front of it.
2. A convex mirror has a wider field of view than a plane mirror of the same size.
Thus convex mirrors enable the driver to view much larger traffic behind him than would be possible with a plane mirror. The main disadvantage of a convex mirror is that it does not give the correct distance and the speed of the vehicle approaching from behind.
We prefer a convex mirror as a rear-view mirror in vehicles because of two reasons –
1. A convex mirror always produces an erect image of the objects.
2. The image formed in a
convex mirror is highly diminished or much smaller than the object, due to which a convex
mirror gives a wide field of view.

Convex mirrors are preferred as rear-view mirrors in vehicles for several reasons:
1. Wide Field of View: Convex mirrors are curved outward, which causes them to diverge light. This divergence results in a wider field of view compared to flat or concave mirrors. A wider field of view is crucial for drivers to see more of the road behind them, reducing blind spots and enhancing overall safety.
2. Reduced Blind Spots: The outward curvature of convex mirrors helps minimize blind spots. Blind spots are areas around a vehicle that are not visible through standard rear-view mirrors. Convex mirrors provide a broader perspective, making it easier for drivers to detect approaching vehicles in adjacent lanes.
3. Image Size Reduction: Convex mirrors produce smaller images of objects compared to flat or concave mirrors. While this makes objects appear farther away than they actually are, it’s beneficial for rear-view mirrors because it allows drivers to see a larger area within the limited size of the mirror.
4. Minimized Glare: Convex mirrors tend to scatter light, which helps in reducing glare from headlights of vehicles behind. This can be particularly advantageous when driving at night.
5. Enhanced Safety: The combination of a wide field of view, reduced blind spots, and minimized glare contributes to improved safety on the road. Convex mirrors provide drivers with better situational awareness, allowing them to make more informed decisions while driving.
