Why did Gandhiji choose “Salt’ as the symbol of his Civil Disobedience Movement?

. (i) Salt is consumed by both the poor and the rich, and is one of the most essential items of food everywhere in the world.
(ii) The British government had the monopoly on the production of salt in India
(iii) By imposing a ‘salt tax’ the government hit both the rich and the poor, specially the poor. Gandhiji thought it was the most repressive Act of the British government and choose to defy it by breaking the “Salt Law”.
The British tax on salt sparked widespread protests in India. Salt was a basic necessity, affecting everyone from rich to poor . Though salt can be made from the sea water by Indians but british restricted this capability. Gandhi saw this as an opportunity to challenge British rule. In 1930, he led the Dandi March, walking 240 miles to make salt from seawater. This peaceful protest highlighted the unfair tax and united Indians against British rule. The salt movement represented daily struggles, Indian pride, and the power of non-violent resistance.
