The ancient Persians referred to India as Hindush or Hindustan. This name was derived from the River Sindhu (Indus), which flows through the northwestern part of the subcontinent. The Persian influence spread across the region, and the term Hindush eventually came to represent the vast land beyond the river. This name was used by the Persians to describe the rich and diverse territory that lay to the east of their empire. Over time, Hindustan became a widely recognized term for the Indian subcontinent.
