  1. Calcination is a process in metallurgy where carbonate ores are heated in the absence of air or with limited air supply to convert them into oxides. During calcination, the carbonate minerals lose carbon dioxide (CO₂) and undergo thermal decomposition. The general reaction for calcination of a carbonate ore, MCO₃ is:
    MCO₃ → MO + CO₂

    M represents the metal cation. Common examples include the calcination of limestone (CaCO₃) to produce quicklime (CaO), an essential step in the production of lime for various industrial applications, including metallurgy and construction.
