The Moon’s phases are caused by its orbit around Earth and the varying angles of sunlight that illuminate its surface. As the Moon moves in its orbit, different portions of the illuminated half are visible from Earth. This results in phases such as new moon, crescent, first quarter, gibbous, and full moon. The cycle repeats approximately every 29.5 days, known as a lunar month.
