The species 27Al, 80Br- and 201Hg2+ have 13, 35 and 80 protons, respectively. How many electrons and neutrons do they have?

  • 1

Neutral aluminium-27 has 13 electrons and 14 neutrons. Bromide ion-80 has 36 electrons and 45 neutrons. Mercury-201 ion has 78 electrons and 121 neutrons. Neutrons equal mass number minus protons and electrons account for charges.

  1. For neutral 27Al, electrons equal protons giving 13 and neutrons equal 27 minus 13, which is 14. For 80Br-, gaining one electron gives 35 plus 1, which is 36 electrons and neutrons equal 80 minus 35, giving 45. For 201Hg2+, losing two electrons gives 80 minus 2, which is 78 electrons and neutrons equal 201 minus 80, which is 121.
