The distance of a chord of length 16 cm from the centre of a circle is 6 cm. Find the radius of the circle.

The perpendicular from the centre to the chord bisects it. Half the chord is 8 cm. Using the right triangle, radius² = 8² + 6² = 100. Therefore, radius = 10 cm.

  1. The chord is 16 cm long, so its half is 8 cm. The perpendicular distance from the centre to the chord is 6 cm. The perpendicular from the centre to a chord bisects the chord. Thus, we get a right triangle with sides 8 cm and 6 cm.

    Radius² = 8² + 6²
    = 64 + 36
    = 100

    Therefore, radius = 10 cm.

    Hence, the radius of the circle is 10 cm.
