Tamanna is a student of Grade 5. She has two chocolates of different sizes. She says that 1/3 of one of her chocolates is bigger than 1/2 other chocolate. Is that correct? Explain why this is so.

No, Tamanna is not correct. We cannot compare fractions if the chocolates are not the same size. 1/3 of a small chocolate can be smaller than 1/2 of a big chocolate. Fractions need equal wholes to compare.

    1. Tamanna’s idea is wrong because both chocolates are not the same size. Fractions only show equal parts of the same whole. 1/3 of a small chocolate may be less than 1/2 of a larger chocolate. To compare fractions, the whole objects must be the same size. Without equal chocolates, her statement about 1/3 being bigger than 1/2 is not correct.
