Mercury thermometer can be used to measure temperature upto
A thermometer is a device used to measure temperature. It operates on the principle of thermal expansion of liquids or changes in electrical resistance. Common types include mercury thermometers alcohol thermometers and digital thermometers. Thermometers are widely used in weather monitoring medical fields and industrial applications.
Chapter 10 of Class 11 Physics deals with the thermal properties of matter. It includes concepts like heat transfer through conduction convection and radiation. The chapter also explains the relationship between temperature and heat energy specific heat capacity and latent heat. It discusses the laws governing the behavior of gases and black body radiation.
Mercury thermometers can measure temperatures up to around 360°C because mercury stays in its liquid state up to this temperature. Beyond this, mercury begins to vaporize and cannot be used for measurements above this point.
