How is displacement different from distance?

  • 1

Displacement includes the direction of motion and represents the straight-line distance between the initial and final positions, whereas distance only specifies the numerical value of the total path length traveled.

  1. Displacement is the shortest distance between the initial and final positions of an object, measured in a straight line regardless of the actual path taken. It includes both magnitude and direction. Distance, however, refers to the total length of the actual path traveled by the object, irrespective of direction. It is always equal to or greater than displacement.
