Why is distillation an effective method for separating a mixture of water and acetone?

  • 1

Distillation is effective because acetone and water have sufficiently different boiling points. Acetone boils at about 56 °C, while water boils at 100 °C, allowing acetone to vaporise first and separate.

  1. Distillation effectively separates water and acetone because their boiling points differ considerably. Acetone boils at about 56 °C, whereas water boils at 100 °C. On heating, acetone vaporises before water forms significant vapour. The acetone vapour then passes through the condenser, where it cools and changes back into liquid. Thus, the two liquids can be separated effectively using distillation because their boiling points differ sufficiently.
