The peddler interprets the acts of kindness and hospitality differently from each person. He initially exploits the crofter’s trust by stealing his money, reflecting his cynical view of the world as a “rattrap.” The ironmaster’s hospitality is seen as conditional, based on a mistaken identity, so the peddler remains wary. However, Edla’s genuine kindness transforms him, as her unconditional care helps him feel valued and inspires him to change his ways, viewing her as the one person whose kindness was sincere and redemptive.
This question related to Chapter: 4 English Class 12th NCERT.
From the chapter The Rattrap.
Give answer according to your understanding.
Peddler interprets the acts of kindness shown by the crofter, the iron master and Edla distinctively. He looked at the crofter through the eyes of a moneylender or a rich man. He did not respect the hospitality accorded to him by the crofter and stole the money held by him. On the contrary, he understood the favor the Iron Master and his daughter did to Peddler and promised a return gift and a big change in himself.
