Multiplying equation (i) by 10 both sides
⇒ 10x = 9.99999…
⇒ 10x = 9 + 0.99999… …
⇒ 10x = 9 + x [From equation (i)]
⇒ 10x – x = 9
⇒ 9x = 9
⇒ x = 9/9 = 1
The answer makes sense as 0.99999… is very close to 1, that is why we can say that 0.99999 = 1.
