Why is the weight of an object on the moon 1/6 th its weight on the earth?
Share
Let ME be the mass of the Earth and m be an object on the surface of the Earth. Let RE be the radius of the Earth. According to the universal law of gravitation, weight WE of the object on the surface of the Earth is given by, ππΈ=πΊπα΄π/π α΄Β²
Let MM and RM be the mass and radius of the moon. Then, according to the universal law of gravitation, weight WM of the object on the surface of the moon is given by:
ππ=πΊπππ/π πΒ²
Now,
βππππΈ=πππ πΈ 2ππΈπ π 2
Where,
ππΈ=5.98Γ1024 ππ
ππ=7.36Γ1022 ππ
π πΈ=6.4Γ106 π
π π=1.74Γ106 π
βππ/ππΈ=7.36Γ10Β²Β²Γ(6.4Γ10βΆ) Β² / 5.98Γ10Β²β΄Γ(1.74Γ10βΆ) Β²=0.165β1/6
Therefore, weight of an object on the moon is 1/6 of its weight on the Earth.
