Paragraph 1
It was a summer afternoon. Gopi was sitting in the veranda, reading a book.

Hindi Translation:
यह एक गर्मी की दोपहर थी। गोपी बरामदे में बैठा एक किताब पढ़ रहा था।

Paragraph 2
Suddenly, he heard something rustling past and falling with a thud in the garden. He wondered what it could be. Perhaps, it was a mango falling from the tree. Immediately, Gopi put his book aside, got up and ran into the garden.

Hindi Translation:
अचानक उसे कुछ सरसराते हुए बगीचे में गिरने की आवाज़ आई। उसने सोचा यह क्या हो सकता है। शायद पेड़ से एक आम गिरा होगा। तुरंत ही गोपी ने किताब एक तरफ रख दी, उठकर बगीचे की ओर भागा।

Paragraph 3
He searched in between the thick grass near the garden fence. But, he found nothing. He looked among the bushes. Nothing was there again. Then, his eyes fell on a heap of dry leaves. There was a white ball on the heap. Gopi reached out and took the ball in his hands. It was a hockey ball.

Hindi Translation:
उसने बगीचे की बाड़ के पास घनी घास के बीच में तलाश की। लेकिन उसे कुछ नहीं मिला। फिर उसने झाड़ियों में देखा। वहाँ भी कुछ नहीं था। फिर उसकी नजर सूखे पत्तों के ढेर पर पड़ी। उस ढेर पर एक सफेद गेंद थी। गोपी ने हाथ बढ़ाकर उसे उठाया। यह एक हॉकी बॉल थी।

Paragraph 4

Gopi wondered, “Whose ball could this be?” He looked around and peeped outside the gate, but could see no one. Just then he heard his mother calling, “Gopi! What are you doing out in the garden? It’s very hot. Come inside.”

Hindi Translation:
गोपी ने सोचा, “यह गेंद किसकी हो सकती है?” उसने चारों ओर देखा और गेट के बाहर भी झाँका, लेकिन कोई नहीं दिखा। तभी उसने अपनी माँ की आवाज़ सुनी, “गोपी! बगीचे में क्या कर रहे हो? बहुत गर्मी है। अंदर आ जाओ।”

Paragraph 5
Gopi went inside and drank a glass of water. He lay down on the mat and said to himself, “I can’t keep this ball for myself. I will ask around.”

Hindi Translation:
गोपी अंदर गया और एक गिलास पानी पिया। वह चटाई पर लेट गया और खुद से बोला, “मैं यह गेंद अपने पास नहीं रख सकता। मैं सब से पूछूँगा।”

Paragraph 6

In the evening, Gopi went to the nearby playground where all his friends regularly gathered to play hockey.

Hindi Translation:
शाम को गोपी पास के मैदान में गया, जहाँ उसके सभी दोस्त रोज़ हॉकी खेलने जमा होते थे।

Paragraph 7

“Friends, this afternoon I found a ball. Did any of you lose your ball recently?” Manoj said, “I lost a ball four months ago.” Gopi said, “So, the ball that I found cannot be yours.” Ramani said, “Then the ball is mine.”

Hindi Translation:
“दोस्तों, आज दोपहर मुझे एक गेंद मिली। क्या तुम में से किसी की गेंद खो गई थी?”
मनोज ने कहा, “मैंने चार महीने पहले एक गेंद खोई थी।”
गोपी ने कहा, “तो फिर यह गेंद तुम्हारी नहीं हो सकती।”
रमणि ने कहा, “तो यह गेंद मेरी है।”

Paragraph 8

“How do you know?” asked Gopi. “What colour is it?” “Show me the ball and I will tell you,” said Ramani smilingly. Another friend Deepak boasted that his father had bought him a brand-new football the previous day. “The ball I found is a hockey ball,” said Gopi. Everyone laughed.

Hindi Translation:
“तुम्हें कैसे पता?” गोपी ने पूछा। “इसका रंग क्या है?”
रमणि ने मुस्कराते हुए कहा, “गेंद मुझे दिखाओ, मैं बता दूंगा।”
एक और दोस्त दीपक ने शेखी मारी कि उसके पापा ने कल ही उसे नई फुटबॉल दिलाई है।
गोपी ने कहा, “मैंने जो गेंद पाई है, वह हॉकी बॉल है।”
सभी हँस पड़े।

Paragraph 9

Gopi took out the ball from his pocket. Manoj grabbed it and tossed it over to Deepak. Seeing this, Gopi said at the top of his voice, “Stop! I say, stop! Let’s play before it gets dark.”

Hindi Translation:
गोपी ने अपनी जेब से गेंद निकाली। मनोज ने उसे झपट लिया और दीपक की ओर उछाल दी।
यह देखकर गोपी ने ज़ोर से कहा, “रुको! मैं कहता हूँ रुको! अंधेरा होने से पहले चलो खेलते हैं।”

Paragraph 10

Manoj went to the goalpost as he liked to be a goalkeeper. Gopi stood at the centre of the field holding the hockey stick. He passed the ball to Deepak, who drove the ball towards Ramani. Ramani dribbled the ball with the stick and it went to Jay.

Hindi Translation:
मनोज गोलपोस्ट की ओर चला गया क्योंकि उसे गोलकीपर बनना पसंद था।
गोपी मैदान के बीच में खड़ा हुआ, हाथ में हॉकी स्टिक लिए।
उसने गेंद दीपक को पास की, जिसने उसे रमणि की ओर बढ़ाया।
रमणि ने स्टिक से गेंद को ड्रीबल किया और गेंद जय तक पहुँच गई।

Paragraph 11

“Come on Jay, play the shot and drive it towards the goalpost,” Manoj said loudly. Jay tightened his wrist around the stick with the flat side touching the ball. He hit the ball so hard that it went past the playground gate and fell into the basket of a passing scooter.

Hindi Translation:
“चलो जय, शॉट खेलो और गोलपोस्ट की ओर मारो,” मनोज ने ज़ोर से कहा।
जय ने स्टिक को मज़बूती से पकड़ते हुए गेंद पर सीधा हिस्सा रखा।
उसने गेंद को इतनी ज़ोर से मारा कि वह मैदान के गेट के पार जाकर एक गुजरते स्कूटर की टोकरी में जा गिरी।

Paragraph 12

The scooterist, who was unaware of what had happened, drove past. By the time the children ran to the gate, the scooter was gone… and so was the ball. They looked at each other and burst into laughter.

Hindi Translation:
स्कूटर चलाने वाला यह सब जाने बिना आगे निकल गया।
जब तक बच्चे गेट तक पहुँचे, तब तक स्कूटर जा चुका था… और गेंद भी।
उन्होंने एक-दूसरे को देखा और ज़ोर से हँस पड़े।
