Magnesium is very reactive metal like (Na, Ca, etc.). When it expose to air it reacts with oxygen to form a layer magnesium oxide (MgO) on its surface.
      𝑀𝑔⏟𝑀𝑎𝑔𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑢𝑚+𝑂₂⏟𝑂𝑥𝑖𝑔𝑒𝑛 → 2𝑀𝑔𝑂⏟ 𝑀𝑎𝑔𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑢𝑚 𝑂𝑥𝑖𝑑𝑒
This layer of magnesium oxide is quite stable and prevents further reaction of magnesium with oxygen. The magnesium ribbon is cleaned by sand paper to remove this layer so that the underlying metal can be used for the reaction.

Magnesium is an extremely reactive metal. In the presence of oxygen, it forms a layer of magnesium oxide on its surface. This layer is quite stable and doesn’t allow further reaction of magnesium with oxygen. Thus, it is necessary to clean magnesium, rubber so that the underlying metal can be available for reaction.

Magnesium is very reactive element which rapidly reacts with oxygen in the air to form a white layer of magnesium oxide and this layer will not burn. Hence, to remove the Magnesium oxide layer from the ribbon which may prevent or slow down the burning of magnesium ribbon, it is necessary to remove this layer.

Magnesium forms magnesium oxide when reacts with oxygen present in air. On the magnesium ribbon a stable layer of magnesium oxide is formed when it is stored, which prevents the further reaction of magnesium ribbon. Hence, to clean up the layer of magnesium oxide, magnesium ribbon is cleaned before burning.

Magnesium has a tendency to react with oxygen in the air to form magnesium oxide (MgO) when it undergoes combustion. However, if the surface of the magnesium ribbon is coated with a layer of magnesium oxide or other impurities, it can hinder or slow down the reaction. Therefore, it is essential to clean the magnesium ribbon before burning it in air to ensure a more efficient and complete combustion.

Cleaning the magnesium ribbon typically involves removing any oxide layer or impurities from the surface. This can be done by gently scraping the ribbon with sandpaper or using a file to expose the clean metallic surface. By doing so, you provide a fresh, unoxidized surface for the magnesium to react with oxygen during combustion, allowing the reaction to proceed more readily and ensuring a more accurate representation of the combustion properties of magnesium.
