Why is sunlight important in the water cycle?

Sunlight provides the heat needed for water to evaporate. Without it, water wouldn’t change to vapour, and clouds or rain wouldn’t form. Sunlight drives the entire water cycle by starting evaporation.

  1. Sunlight plays a key role in the water cycle. It heats rivers, lakes and oceans, causing water to evaporate into vapour. This vapour rises, cools and forms clouds. Eventually, it returns as rain or snow. Without sunlight, the cycle wouldn’t begin and water would not move through air, land and sky. Sunlight helps renew freshwater sources and supports all life on Earth.
