  1. The Earth’s atmosphere is essential for life. It supplies oxygen for animals and humans and carbon dioxide for plants. It shields us from the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays using the ozone layer. The atmosphere also keeps the planet warm by trapping heat—a process called the greenhouse effect. It carries water vapor, enabling rainfall and weather systems. Without it, life couldn’t survive. The atmosphere is like a protective blanket, regulating temperature and supporting all living organisms on Earth.
