Why does the Brahmaputra increase in size during summer?

  • 1

The Brahmaputra increases in size during summer because melting snow from the Himalayas adds large volumes of water to it. Unlike rivers that dry up, the Brahmaputra swells and floods lowlands, carrying sediment and supporting agriculture and biodiversity in the northeast.

  1. During summer, the Brahmaputra River swells in size due to the melting of Himalayan glaciers and increased rainfall in the eastern region. As temperatures rise, snow and ice from mountains melt rapidly, releasing a vast amount of water into the river. Unlike other rivers that reduce in volume during summer, the Brahmaputra becomes larger, often leading to floods. This increase supports agriculture and wetlands but also poses challenges like erosion and displacement for people living along its banks.
