  1. Some foods last for weeks because they have little or no moisture, making it hard for microbes to grow. Examples are ghee, pickles and dried grains. Others, like bread, milk and fresh vegetables, spoil within days as their moisture content and exposure to air create ideal conditions for microbes to multiply rapidly.
