Why do people feel breathless at high altitudes?

  • 1

At high altitudes, atmospheric pressure is lower, meaning less oxygen is available in the air. Our bodies get less oxygen with each breath, leading to breathlessness, dizziness or tiredness. That’s why mountaineers and travellers need time to adjust or acclimatise.

  1. People feel breathless at high altitudes because the air pressure is lower, resulting in reduced oxygen levels. As we climb higher, our lungs take in less oxygen per breath, causing fatigue, dizziness, and shortness of breath. This condition is common among trekkers, soldiers, or tourists visiting places like Ladakh or the Himalayas. To cope, people are advised to acclimatise slowly, allowing the body time to adjust. Acclimatisation helps the body produce more red blood cells to carry oxygen.
