Why can’t we compare 1/3 of one chocolate and 1/2 of another chocolate if the chocolates are not the same size?

  • 1

We cannot compare because the chocolates are different in size. Fractions only show parts of the same whole. 1/3 of a small chocolate can be less than 1/2 of a bigger chocolate. Equal wholes are needed to compare correctly.

  1. Fractions represent equal parts of the same whole. If the wholes are different, like two chocolates of different sizes, then 1/3 of one and 1/2 of the other cannot be compared fairly. For example, 1/3 of a small chocolate may be smaller than 1/2 of a big chocolate. To compare fractions correctly, the whole objects should always be the same size. That is why Tamanna’s statement was wrong.
