Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, popularly known as Rajaji, became the first and only Indian Governor-General of independent India. He succeeded Lord Mountbatten in June 1948. A brilliant lawyer, statesman and writer, he held the position until January 26, 1950, when India officially became a Republic and the office of the Governor-General was replaced by the President of India.
