While mountains are made of rock and their shape is fixed, why do you think sand dunes also have a similar shape, even though they are made of sand?

Sand dunes have similar shapes to mountains because of wind movement. The wind constantly pushes sand in a particular direction, forming a mound with a gentle and steep side, much like a mountain. However, dunes are mobile and change shape with time.

  1. Though made of loose sand, dunes form mountain-like shapes due to wind erosion and deposition. Winds blow sand in one direction, building up a gentle slope on the windward side and a steep slope on the leeward side. This process mimics how mountains look, but unlike mountains, dunes are not fixed—they shift and reshape over time. This similarity in shape is a result of natural forces sculpting landforms, whether hard like rock or soft like sand.
