Which of the following statements about the stratosphere is false? (A) This layer is largely free of clouds. (B) The amount of dust particles and water vapor is very low in this layer. (C) The stratosphere extends up to a height of 50 km. (D) The boundary of the stratosphere meets the ionosphere.

Statement (D) is false because the boundary of the stratosphere meets the mesosphere, not the ionosphere. The transition zone at the top of the stratosphere is called the stratopause. Beyond this boundary, the mesosphere begins, followed by the thermosphere and then the ionosphere. Therefore, the stratosphere is physically separated from the ionosphere by an entire atmospheric layer. ANSWER: (D) The boundary of the stratosphere meets the ionosphere.

  1. The claim that the stratosphere’s boundary meets the ionosphere is scientifically incorrect. In the vertical structure of the atmosphere, the stratosphere is followed by the mesosphere. The boundary between these two is the stratopause, located at an altitude of fifty kilometers. The ionosphere is a much higher region, typically starting around eighty kilometers within the thermosphere. While the other statements about the stratosphere—such as its lack of clouds, low water vapor and fifty-kilometer height—are all true, the layering sequence clearly places the mesosphere between the stratosphere and the ionised upper air. Understanding this order is fundamental.
