The Chinook is nicknamed the “snow eater” because of its incredible power to melt snow in North America. These warm, dry winds can raise the temperature by 20 degrees Celsius in just a few hours. This rapid heat causes snow to evaporate or melt almost instantly, clearing the ground for animals and people in the middle of a cold winter. ANSWER: (A) Chinook

  1. The name “snow eater” is a literal description of what the Chinook does. Because the wind is extremely dry and warm, it performs a process called sublimation, where snow turns directly into water vapor without even melting into a puddle first. For people living in the “rain shadow” of the Rocky Mountains, the Chinook is a famous winter guest. It can clear a foot of snow in a single morning. This makes it a very important wind for cattle ranchers, as it allows their cows to reach the grass buried under the winter snow.
