The poem Endymion by John Keats is based on the Greek legend of Endymion, a handsome shepherd and the beloved of the moon goddess Selene (or Diana). According to the myth, Endymion was granted eternal sleep by Zeus so that he could remain forever young and beautiful. Selene, deeply in love with him, visits him every night. Keats’s poem draws upon this legend to explore themes of love, beauty, and the eternal nature of the idealized vision of beauty, much like the eternal beauty that he speaks of in “A Thing of Beauty.”
