When radio signals from the ground hit these layers of charged particles, they are bent and reflected back toward the Earth. This allows shortwave radio broadcasts to travel thousands of miles across the globe, reaching beyond the curvature of the Earth. Without this reflective property of the ionosphere, terrestrial long-range communication would be much more difficult, requiring a much denser network of satellites or ground stations.
