While Indonesia and Japan have many volcanoes, the Philippine Archipelago is considered one of the regions with the highest density of active volcanoes relative to its land area. It is located on the western edge of the Pacific Ring of Fire, where multiple tectonic plates converge, creating intense volcanic and seismic activity. ANSWER: (D) Philippine Archipelago

  1. The Philippines sits on a complex “mobile belt” between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate. This leads to the formation of multiple volcanic arcs, such as the Luzon arc. Famous active volcanoes like Mayon (known for its perfect cone), Taal and Pinatubo are all located here. The archipelago’s small landmass combined with its intense tectonic setting means that volcanic hazards are a constant part of life. While Indonesia has the highest total number of volcanoes, the density and frequency of activity in the Philippines make it a global “hotspot” for volcanology.
