Where is ozone concentrated the most in the atmosphere? (A) Stratosphere (B) Troposphere (C) Ionosphere (D) Mesosphere

Ozone is concentrated most heavily within the stratosphere, specifically in a region known as the ozone layer. Found between fifteen and thirty-five kilometers above the Earth, this concentrated belt of O3 molecules is critical for life. It absorbs the sun’s most dangerous ultraviolet radiation, protecting the surface from the intense energy that would otherwise cause significant biological harm. ANSWER: (A) Stratosphere

  1. While ozone can be found in small amounts throughout the atmosphere, roughly ninety percent of it resides in the stratosphere. This high concentration is the result of a chemical cycle where solar ultraviolet light splits oxygen molecules, which then bond with other oxygen atoms to form ozone. This layer acts as a global sunscreen, filtering out nearly all of the sun’s harmful UV-B and UV-C rays. Without this high-altitude concentration of ozone, terrestrial life would be impossible, as the radiation would damage DNA and disrupt the food chain. Its presence also contributes to the stratosphere’s unique warming trend.
