Where does a cell come from?

A cell comes from pre-existing cells through cell division. According to cell theory, new cells are formed only by division of existing cells. This process ensures growth, repair and reproduction in living organisms.

  1. Cells originate from pre-existing cells through a process called cell division. This idea was proposed by Rudolf Virchow and is part of cell theory. During division, a parent cell divides to form new daughter cells. This process helps in growth, tissue repair and reproduction. No new cell is formed spontaneously; every cell has a cellular origin.
