When is decantation preferred over filtration?

Decantation is preferred over filtration when the solid particles in a liquid have settled at the bottom and the liquid is clear enough to pour off easily. It is a faster and simpler process, especially when the solid is heavy and doesn’t mix with the liquid, like when water and sand are separated. Filtration, on the other hand, is used when the solid particles are fine and do not settle quickly. Decantation works best for separating liquids and larger, heavier solids.
