When does an electric short circuit occur?
Share
An electric short circuit occurs when there’s an unintended path of low resistance that allows current to flow in a circuit. This can happen due to damaged wires, faulty insulation, or a connection between the live and neutral wires. Essentially, it’s like an electrical detour that can lead to problems like overheating and potentially dangerous situations. So, be cautious and keep those circuits in check!
When positive and negative wires touch each other, the resistance suddenly decreases and current increases. This leads to excessive heating of wire which manifests in the form of sparks. This is called short circuit.
When neutral wire and live wire touch each other that they come in direct contact, the resistance of the circuit becomes small and a large amount of current flows through it. As a result of which, a large amount of heat is produced and the circuit catches fire.
If either the insulation of wires used in an electrical circuit is damaged or there is a fault in the appliance, live wire and neutral wire may come in direct contact. As a result, the current in the circuit abruptly rises and short-circuiting occurs.
